Coffee With Chaga and L-Theanine: What's Actually in the Cup

500mg wild harvested chaga extract and 100mg L-theanine per serving

Most mushroom coffee is built around lion's mane or cordyceps. Ours isn't. MyCelia uses Chaga, and pairs it with L-theanine — an amino acid that comes from green tea, not from a mushroom at all.

It's an unusual combination, and people ask about it, so here's a plain explanation of what's in the bag.

What Chaga is

Chaga is a fungus that grows on birch trees in cold climates — Northern Europe, Russia, Canada, the northern United States. It doesn't look like a mushroom. It looks like a piece of burnt bark clinging to a trunk, dark and cracked on the outside, rust-orange inside.

It has a long history of traditional use, and it's been part of folk practice in the regions where it grows for a very long time. What we can tell you with confidence is what it is and where it comes from — not what it will do for you.

For coffee, Chaga is used as an extract rather than ground raw material. Extraction concentrates it and, more importantly for our purposes, controls the flavour.

What L-theanine is

L-theanine is an amino acid found naturally in green tea leaves. It's part of why green tea tastes the way it does — it contributes to the savoury, rounded quality tea drinkers call umami, and it takes some of the sharp edge off bitterness.

That last part is the reason it's in our coffee. Both coffee and chaga carry natural bitterness. L-theanine softens it.

Why 500mg and 100mg

Every serving of MyCelia contains 500mg of wild harvested Chaga extract and 100mg of L-theanine.

Those numbers are printed on the bag, which is less common in this category than you'd expect. A lot of products list a "proprietary blend" without saying how much of anything is in it — which means you can't compare products, and you can't tell whether the mushroom on the front of the bag is a meaningful ingredient or a decoration.

We print the amounts because you should be able to check.

What it tastes like

Like coffee. That's the short answer and the honest one.

MyCelia is 100% Arabica from South America, small-batch roasted to a medium profile — velvety body, clean finish. The chaga extract is chosen for purity and blended so it sits underneath the roast rather than on top of it. If you're expecting an earthy, mushroomy cup, you won't get one.

What's not in it

No added sugar. No sweeteners. No filler. No proprietary blend hiding the amounts.

Four ingredients across the range: Arabica coffee, Chaga extract, L-theanine, and — in the flavoured blends only — natural flavouring. That's the whole list.
